A Significant Transport & Logistics Operation

Situation

A significant transport and logistics business has 74 employees and a disparity about what constitutes good hygiene practices. Warehouse staff, drivers, sales representatives and administration staff all shared the same washroom facility.

Complaints about the state of the washrooms were constantly being made to management and inconsistent personal hygiene practices were observed. This was causing disharmony amongst the differing workforces and was a constant problem for management.

The company had 360 Hygiene conduct an audit to see, once and for all,  how hygienic and health safe the communal facilities health safe communal facilities were.

The company had seven washroom facilities with separate toilet cubicles, urinals and communal hand basins. They spent around $122,000 on sick leave per annum with 239 days were lost to sickness (on average),  on average, each year.

Action Taken

360 Hygiene completed a 35 point swab analysis and of those, 8 passed, 11 were borderline and 16 were contaminated.  They had regular cleaning services three times a week. Handwashing audits were conducted, and it found that 10 people were washing their hands effectively, 46 were attempting to and 18 people were not washing their hands at all.

The audit identified that the washroom facilities were used 370-592 times per day, which was an incredible 740 – 1,184 times between cleaning services.

A weekly workplace hygiene programme was implemented including the sanitisation of the washrooms and fixtures (toilets, urinals and hand basins). Nano Shield antimicrobial surface protectant as applied to all fixtures and contact points including door handles, cubicle latches and light switches. This kills 99.99% of germs, viruses and bacteria upon contact and provides continuous protection for up to 14 days.

  • Cloth roller towel dispensers were replaced with paper towels to reduce the risk of cross-contamination
  • Air fresheners were installed in washrooms to combat persistent odours
  • Hand sanitiser dispensers were installed at various entry and exit locations
  • Ongoing hygiene audits were implemented every four months, along with certification to track and maintain hygiene gains and to provide verification that the washrooms were indeed hygienic and health safe.

Result

A huge improvement in visual cleanliness was observed, along with the elimination of the persistent odours. Hygiene audits were implemented every four months, which the company passed consistently.

Harmony between staff members was restored and management received positive feedback about the improved cleanliness. Anecdotally, administrative staff noticed a reduction in the number of sick days taken following the implementation of the services.

The audit identified that the washroom facilities were used 370-592 times per day, which was an incredible 740 – 1,184 times between cleaning services.
